Each year, CRDF Global presents the George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation to recognize individuals for their critical work advancing international cooperation in science and technology. The Award furthers the late Congressman George Brown's vision for international research cooperation and commemorates his important role in the efforts leading to CRDF Global's creation.
In 2011, CRDF Global is pleased to recognize three individuals for their scientific and humanitarian achievements:
- Dr. Craig Barrett, faculty at Thunderbird School of Global Management and former chairman of the Intel Corporation
- Dr. Rita Colwell, chairman and president of CosmosID, Inc., senior advisor of Canon US Life Sciences, Inc., and a distinguished university professor both at the University of Maryland at College Park and at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and 2011 U.S. science envoy
- Ambassador Thomas Pickering, vice chairman of Hills & Co., International Consultants, a career ambassador at the U.S. Department of State and the former ambassador to the Russian Federation, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the United Nations.
A distinguished list of presenters and honored guests will join CRDF Global in paying tribute to the awardees:
- Dr. Arden Bement, David A. Ross Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Director of the Global Policy Research Institute at Purdue University
- The Honorable William J. Burns, Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of State
- Dr. Vinton Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist at Google
- Ambassador Carla A. Hills, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Hills & Company International Consultants
- Mr. Viktor Vekselberg, President of the Skolkovo Foundation
Additionally, CRDF Global is honored to have distinguished members of the international community serving as co-chairs of the event:
- The Honorable Madeleine K. Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group
- Dr. Ivor Knight, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer at Canon U.S. Life Sciences
- Dr. Charles Vest, President of the National Academy of Engineering and President Emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Ambassador Frank Wisner, Foreign Affairs Advisor at Patton Boggs LLP and U.S. Career Ambassador
Since its founding in 1995, CRDF Global has served as a leader in promoting international science cooperation. The gala event will celebrate CRDF Global's successful programs and services in more than 30 countries worldwide, carried out on behalf of several dozen government and private sector funders and clients.
